Wagner College is a private liberal arts college in Staten Island, New York City. It has an undergraduate enrollment of 1,750 students. This is smaller than some high schools.

Wagner College was founded in 1883 in Rochester, New York, as the Lutheran Proseminary of Rochester. Its purpose was to prepare young men for admission to Lutheran seminaries and to ensure that they were sufficiently fluent in both English and German to minister to the large German immigrant community of that day. The school's six-year curriculum (covering the high-school and junior-college years) was modeled on the German gymnasium curriculum.

In 1918, the college moved to Staten Island, and in the 1920s, the curriculum began to move toward an American-style liberal arts curriculum. The college admitted women in 1933.

About the Seahawks

The Wagner Seahawks are composed of 23 teams. Sports sponsored for both men and women are basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track & field (both indoor and outdoor), and water polo (women's team ranked #18). Sports sponsored only for men are baseball and football. Women-only sports are fencing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, triathlon, and field hockey.

Keep in mind this school only has 1750 students. How does this student population support this many teams?

They must not have any intramural sports. Everybody is automatically on varsity.

About the Seahawks Basketball Team

The Seahawks have appeared in the NCAA Division I Tournament once before in 2003 as a No. 15 seed, losing to No. 2 seed Pitt in the First Round, 61-87. They appeared in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) four times (combined record 1 4) and the NCAA Division II Tournament three times (3 3).

They are coached by Donald Copeland who played basketball under Bob Hurley (father of current UConn coach Dan Hurley) at St. Anthony High School where he helped lead the team to two New Jersey state titles, while also earning all-state honors. He played collegiately at Seton Hall before playing professionally in Europe and Puerto Rico. This is his second season as head coach at Wagner.

A notable former head coach and Scranton, PA, native is P.J. Carlesimo. Carlesimo coached Wagner from 1976-1982, then went to coach Seton Hall to the National Championship game in 1989, losing to Michigan in overtime. He then spent most of his professional career coaching in the NBA.

The Seahawks are only one game over .500 with a 16-15 overall record. Not good.

Worse yet, they finished with a NEC record of 7-9, finishing sixth in the 9-team conference that consists of powerhouses such as Merrimack, Le Moyne, St. Francis (PA), and Stonehill.

How did they come up with the nickname Seahawks?

Wagner College was founded in Rochester, New York, and moved to Staten Island in 1918. Intercollegiate athletic competition began just after the move with the debut of their men s basketball team in 1920. Their new campus was situated atop Grymes Hill (sounds clean), among the highest points on Staten Island, so their first teams were primarily known as the Hilltoppers, though being called by their Green and White school colors was also common. The football team debuted in 1927 and was sometimes called the Green Wave.

In 1947, they decided to have student competition to come up with a new nickname. Present students picked between Eagles, Green Dragons, Pandas, and Sea Hawks. By an apparent overwhelming majority , the winner was Sea Hawks , which was shortened to the one-word Seahawks almost immediately.

Wagner s current mascot is a costumed seahawk known simply as The Seahawk.

Do you want to be The Seahawk?

2023-24 Mascot FlyerThe Wagner Athletics Department is in search of interested students willing to join their rotation of mascot-wearers in 2023-24!

Spirit stipends are available of $500/semester! You would be expected to be available for football and basketball home games, as well as for special events on campus hosted by other departments.

The only other DI basketball team with the nickname the Seahawks is UNC Wilmington.

Wagner NET ranking is 290 out of 362.

UNCW NET ranking is 118.

Yeah. Definitely the wrong Seahawk team is playing in this year's tournament.
