About the Seahawks

The UNCW basketball program moved to Division I in 1976 and has appeared six times in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. This year, seeded second in the CAA Tournament, UNCW posted a hard-fought 76-72 victory over Delaware to capture the 2025 CAA Men s Basketball Championship. It was the league-record seventh CAA championship for the Seahawks, who earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Men s Basketball Championship. It was the first title for UNCW since 2017 after falling in the finals in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, the Seahawks appeared in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) where they were the champions.

A former UNCW player who is now a head coach: Arkansas head coach John Calipari.

Calipari played two years (1978-80) at UNCW before transferring to Clarion University of Pennsylvania (close to where he grew up), from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing. He played point guard at Clarion during the 1981 and 1982 seasons, leading the team in assists and free throw percentage.

Calipari now coaches Arkansas but might be best known for his stints at UMass, Memphis, and Kentucky, and for his numerous vacated victories for various NCAA violations.

He continues to be one of the most hated coaches in college basketball.

Just ask the late great John Chaney what he thinks of Calipari.

There are also some ESPN clips in that link from 1994 of Grant Hill playing for Duke, and Wake Forest coach Dave Odom, father of current VCU coach Ryan Odom, and Randolph Childress playing for Wake this was my era as a student at Maryland. Good times.

The Seahawks first head coach was Mel Gibson (nope, not that Mel Gibson, thankfully).

Current Clemson coach Brad Brownell was a head coach at UNCW from 2002-06, going to the NCAA tournament twice during those four seasons.

He does not have any vacated victories.

The Seahawks play their home games in Trask Coliseum, where the student section is known to be the best in the CAA.
