Oakland University Elliott
Tower - Elliott Tower is a carillon tower completed in 2014. Oakland University is a public research university located
in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Founded
in 1957 through a then $2M donation of Matilda Dodge Wilson (widow of
automobile pioneer John Dodge) and her second husband, lumber broker Alfred
G. Wilson, it was initially known as Michigan State University-Oakland,
operating under the Michigan State University Board of Trustees, before
gaining institutional independence from the board in 1970. The university's site comprises the Main Campus, Meadow Brook Estate, and two nationally ranked golf courses spread across 1,443 acres. Meadow Brook Hall, a US National Historic Landmark and the fourth-largest historic house museum in the United States, is located on the site. It was built by the Wilsons between 1926 and 1929 for then $4 million. Meadow Brook Hall About the Golden Grizzlies The Oakland men's basketball program began competing in the 1967 season, 10 years after the university opened. Originally nicknamed the Pioneers, Oakland played at the Division II level until 1997 when they changed their nickname to the Golden Grizzlies and began the transition to Division I. OU opened the Athletics Center O'rena in 1998. When the O'rena was being built, home basketball games were played in the Sports Dome, an inflatable "bubble" used for practice by Oakland's athletic teams during the winter. The original basketball stadium was in the Lepley Sports Center. Their Mascot Grizz Greg Kampe
On March 8, 2023, Kampe became the current longest tenured men s college basketball coach after Jim Boeheim retired after 47 years. Kampe, raised in Ohio, attended Bowling Green State University where he played football and basketball. Kampe was a kicker, punter and cornerback on the football team. In a 16 14 win over Southern Mississippi in 1975, Kampe broke the Mid-American Conference and BGSU record for average yards per punt with 57.5. A 77-yard punt in the game also set the BGSU record for longest punt. After graduating from Bowling Green in 1978, Kampe went right into coaching basketball as an assistant at Toledo from 1978-1984. Since 1984, Kampe has been Oakland's head basketball coach. MOST
