Longwood University Longwood University is a public university in Farmville, Virginia. Founded in 1839 as Farmville Female Seminary and colloquially known as Longwood or Longwood College, it is the third-oldest public university in Virginia and one of the hundred oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. Previously a female seminary, normal school, and college, Longwood became coeducational in 1976 and gained university status in 2002. About the Lancers Since 2012, Longwood Lancers men's basketball team has competed in the Big South. Their current head coach is Griff Aldrich, a one-time lawyer and chief financial officer of a private equity firm who formerly served as the recruiting director for UMBC. The Lancers made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2022. The men's basketball program began in 1976, when the school became fully co-educational that same year. The Lancers finished 1 6 against four-year institutions in the inaugural season, and 2 9 overall. The Lancers were NCAA Division III members for their first four years. In 1980, they became Division II members, until 2004, when they began a transition to Division I membership. They became full Division I members in 2007. Their Mascot
An online voting process took place where voters can choose from three of the over 150 name submissions the selection committee considered. The choices were Luey, Luquus, and Elwood. The students chose Elwood. Elwood is available for special appearances. The Joan Perry Brock Center The arena the Lancers play in is named after Joan Brock, a philanthropist and 1964 alum, who provided $15 million, the largest gift in Longwood University's history, towards the arena's $40 million price tag. This arena is BRAND SPANKIN NEW, opening on August 25, 2023. It already has the nickname "The JPB" (not to be confused with the BJC). NOW THAT'S A GYM!! Joan Perry Brock Center I hope Joan gets a free seat and a free soda. |
