Lipscomb University Lipscomb University was founded in 1891 by David Lipscomb and James A. Harding (not James Harden). The campus grounds consist predominantly of the former estate of David Lipscomb, who donated it to the school. The school was never intended to function as a seminary, although a seminary is a part of the university, but rather as a Christian liberal arts institution. Its original name was the Nashville Bible School, which was changed to David Lipscomb College, then to David Lipscomb University. All full-time, undergraduate students are required to take Bible classes and attend chapel twice a week. In addition to the university campus, there is also an on-campus high school and middle school; the associated elementary school moved to a renovated former public school a few blocks away in 1986. All three comprise Lipscomb Academy, offering Pre-kindergarten through high school education. And with the university, YOU NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE LIPSCOMB AND YOU NEVER WILL The Bisons made the NCAA tournament for the first time in 2018. They competed in the NIT twice, in 2006 and 2019, and they won the NAIA National Champions in 1986. Lipscomb maintains a rivalry with nearby Belmont University, and the two men's basketball teams compete annually in a game known as the Battle of the Boulevard. The game is named for Belmont Boulevard, which both schools are located on; the 2 miles separating the schools makes them among the closest rivals in NCAA Division I men's basketball. The rivalry began in 1953, when both schools played in the NAIA, and continued into the NCAA when both schools transitioned to Division I in the 1990s. Belmont beat them this year. The Lipscomb Bisons traditionally include the "s", though the plural of "bison" is usually not "bisons." Nobody knows why they go by Bisons. Not even the university. I guess when you go to the same school since Pre-K, you never really know if what they are teaching you is 100% correct. Like graduates of Shenandoah High School they were taught that the proper way to end each sentence is with the phrase "da-[fudge]" instead of a period. That is not universally accepted as correct. Lipscomb's
mascot Lou Bison throws his hands up in the air as if to say: "I
don't know why we go by Bisons either.
It's just me. I'm just one
bison." |
