High Point University High Point University (HPU) is a private university in High Point, North Carolina. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university was founded as High Point College in 1924, and it became High Point University in 1991. The High Point Panthers are the 17 varsity athletic teams that all compete at the NCAA Division I level. All sports except men's lacrosse and women's rowing compete in the Big South Conference. The men's lacrosse team joined the Atlantic 10 Conference after the 2022 season. Women's rowing was added in 2024 25, initially competing as an independent until joining the new rowing league of the Mid-American Conference in 2025 26. The Panthers joined Division I in 1999, after having been NCAA Division II and being members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) prior to 1992. The men's basketball team began varsity play in 1927 28 and participated in the NAIA national tournament seven times between 1939 and 1979 and in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1997. Their current coach Alan Huss is in only his second year as a head coach and is 56-14 (.800) in those two years. Their players come from all over the world including France, Lithuania, Canada, Iceland, Australia, Cameroon, and Croatia. Although they have two 7-footers on their roster, their top scorers are closer to 6' than 7', They play in an INCREDIBLE arena the Quebin Center which just opened in 2021 at a construction cost of $170 million.
