I wonder what ocean that is Florida Atlantic University (Florida Atlantic or FAU) is a public research university with its main campus in Boca Raton, Florida, and satellite campuses in Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter, and Fort Pierce. FAU belongs to the 12-campus State University System of Florida and serves South Florida. FAU opened in 1964 as the first public university in the Miami metro area. FAU basketball began play in 1988 and in its 19+ seasons has experienced limited success, marred with frequent coaching changes.
That all changed in 2022 where the #9 seed FAU went all the way to the Final Four before losing to #5 San Diego State, 71-72. Along the way they beat #16 FDU (who upset #1 Purdue), #4 Tennessee, and #3 Kansas State. The Owls return most of their team from last year's Final Four run The Burrow
The Owls play their home basketball games at a place nicknamed The Burrow.
On November 16, 2022, the FAU athletic department received a $7.5 million gift from Eleanor R. Baldwin to rename the arena as the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. With this most recent gift, Baldwin's total philanthropic support of FAU is now more than $10 million. A retired educator, she taught for 34 years with much of her tenure at Broward County schools. In addition, Baldwin continues to serve FAU as director emerita of the FAU Foundation Board and as a College of Education Advisory Board member. About the Owls The Owls have only been in Division I since 1993. FAU's 850-acre Boca Raton campus was built on a former US Army airfield which was originally inhabited by a variety of wildlife, including burrowing owls, which are still seen on campus. Owlsley and Hoot are the names of the mascots for Florida Atlantic University. Yes, they have two mascots that work together like Batman and Robin.
With the addition of intercollegiate athletics in the mid-1980s, the university used the owl as its mascot - an animal that they say denotes wisdom, determination and cognizance. Owls have the reputation of being wise and smart, but now ornithologists believe they are one of the dumbest species of bird there is. So dumb. |
