The
first game of the Sweet 16 saw No. 2 Alabama break all kinds of records in
their blowout win over No. 6 BYU, 113-88.
At
least that's what the reports say I was watching the Maryland game because,
you know, there was absolutely no way to stagger these games so that you could
watch all of them.
Alabama
broke the 35-year-old Tournament record for 3-pointers making 25 of 51 to
break the record of 21 set by Loyola Marymount in a second-round game against
Michigan in 1990. Alabama's Mark Sears 10 3s were
one short of the record set by Loyola Marymount's Jeff Fryer in that 149-115
win over Michigan.
I
felt like the basket was as big as an ocean, Sears said. I
lost myself in the game.
Alabama
took 51 3-point shot attempts during the game. They only took 15
2-point shot attempts. They also had
21 free throw attempts.
Shooters
gotta shoot.
In
the second game of the night, it was the bigs that
made the difference with No. 1 Florida outrebounding No. 4 Maryland
42-20. That 22 rebound advantage was
just a bit more than the margin of victory for Florida, beating Maryland
87-71.
Bigs gotta board.
The season
is over for BYU and Maryland.
And chances
are, both these teams will look very different next year.
The
transfer portal opened on Monday. By
the end of Monday, there were around 1000 names in
the portal.
There
are around 6,850 players in men's Division I basketball.
