A day after
the men's team won on a buzzer-beater bank shot from freshman Derik Queen to
advance to Sweet 16, the Maryland women completed a 17-point comeback to win
a 111-108 double-overtime thriller over Alabama, advancing to the Sweet 16
for the fourth time in five years.
It's
the Terrapins' second-largest comeback in NCAA tournament history, trailing
just an 18-point comeback against Texas A&M in 2012. They will now face No. 1 seed South Carolina.
This
was the first double-overtime game in the Tournament since 2022, when UConn
beat NC State, and the Terrapins' 17-point comeback was the seventh-largest in NCAA Tournament history,
The
219 points scored were the second-most in a tournament game.
Ironically, Alabama was also on the losing side of the highest-scoring
game ever when they fell to Duke in quadruple-overtime in the second round
back in 1995, 121-120.
It's
also the first time in Maryland history where both the men's and women's
teams advanced to the Sweet 16 in the same year.
Alabama
had the player-of-the game in Sarah Ashlee Barker who scored a career-high 45
points to set an Alabama school record, tying for the fourth most points in
NCAA Tournament history. She also hit
three free throws with 0.7 seconds on the clock in the first overtime to send
it to the second overtime. Barker is
the daughter of Jay Barker who was Alabama's quarterback in 1992 during its
championship season.
I do
not believe she is related to Bob Barker.
